HUGS QUILTS for KIDS

1139 - and counting !!

"Give a Hug and Get a Hug"

Since 2005 Covington Quilters Guild members have sewn and provided

homemade quilts (hugs) to the following children's organizations:

Mary Bridge Children’s Oncology Department - Tacoma, WA.:

Children, ages 1 to 18, receiving chemo treatments.  These are truly a security quilt used during chemo.

Needs - 10 to 12 quilts every month.   Toddlers to teens.

NOTE:  They appreciate the larger 50” plus quilts with soft backing as the children wrap themselves in our hug during chemo.  However, they will take any our guild cares to make.  Quilts are sometimes given to traumatized children who are not affected with cancer.  e.g. Burn victims.

Western Washington Candlelighters - “Introduction Bags” Children’s Hospital

Children, ages 1-18,

Needs - 10 to 12 quilts a month, any ages.

NOTE:  Given to children receiving chemo therapy at Children’s Hospital, Fred Hutchinson and Madigan Hospital.  The Candlelighter’s “Bags” include helpful information on a particular child’s cancer and what to expect, pre-paid phone and gas cards, Bucky Pillows and a list of resource/support people for both child and their family.  This is an extremely worthy organization.

PICC - Pediatric InterimCareCenter - Kent, WA

Newborn Infants addicted to narcotics.  They arrive from all over the state of Washington.

Needs - 10 to 15 baby quilts per month and 1 to 5 twenty four square flannel quilts for the baby warmers

NOTE:  Only facility of it’s kind in the US.  Can accommodate up to twenty five infants at a time.  Usual length of stay is 21 days.  Baby receives a quilt upon it’s release to either a foster home, drug free parent(s) or a relative.

ValleyMedicalCenter - Intensive Care Unit for Newborns, Kent, WA.

Newborns

Needs - 15 - 20 baby quilts per month.

NOTE:  For Life threatened Premature babies who are in the Intensive Care Unit.  Up to two month stays in the unit.  Quilts will be for them to use and take home upon release.

Ryther Child Center

Children ages 6-12 years from all over Washington State.

Needs - 20 quilts per quarter.  Preferred size 48 x 60, cotton, machine quilted for strength and non-baby prints

NOTE:  Ryther is a residential treatment center for children who have been physically and sexually abused and have significant behavior problems due to the abuse.  They house up to 67 children in cottages.  Upon entry the child chooses a cheerful quilt to wrap themselves in, like a parent’s arms filled with love.

Covington and Auburn Multi Care Oncology Dept for Adults

Adults

Needs – High turnover of patients.  20 Plus per quarter.  Lap quilts size 40 x 60 minimum.

A 2008 Quilt Show Project.  Covington Quilters voted to continue providing quilts for the adults who are without support from family and friends.  Also a need for Head Huggers ( Chemo Caps.)  FYI:  No other organization provides quilts for them.

Fund Raising Auctions

We also provide quilts for fund raising events.  These include; Candle lighter's of Western Washington, Make A Wish Foundation, Seattle Children's Hospital Guilds, Covington Multi Care Breast Cancer events, Vine Maple Place of MapleValley, Children's Therapy Center of Covington and many other organizations.
